About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha, or the 'Festival of Sacrifice', falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, coinciding with the conclusion of Hajj. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's (peace be upon him) devotion and willingness to sacrifice for Allah. Muslims around the world observe it by offering Udhiya (sacrificial animal), sharing meat with the poor, joining family gatherings, and performing extra prayers.

  • Coincides with the completion of Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah and is the holiest time of the Islamic year.
  • Begins with a special Eid prayer, followed by the ritual sacrifice (Udhiya/Qurbani), recalling the story of Ibrahim and his son Ismail (peace be upon them).
  • Reflects values of faith, obedience, generosity, and unity—Muslims share the meat with family, friends, and those in need.
  • Spiritual opportunities: fasting the Day of Arafah, giving charity, visiting loved ones, and spreading Eid blessings.
How to Prepare for Eid al-Adha

Make your Eid al-Adha even more meaningful with these practical tips for preparation and celebration.

  • Intend to fast the Day of Arafah (for non-pilgrims), a day when sins are forgiven and prayers are accepted.
  • Plan for the ritual sacrifice (Udhiya), select your animal, and arrange for distribution to those in need.
  • Attend the special Eid prayer in congregation, dress well, and praise Allah with Takbeer.
  • Visit relatives and neighbors, offer gifts, and share festive meals with the community.
