About Ashura

Ashura (10 Muharram) is one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates Allah saving Prophet Musa (Moses) and his followers, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ recommended Muslims to fast this day in gratitude. It is also a day of major historical events for Muslim communities.

  • Ashura marks Allah's deliverance of Prophet Musa (a.s.) and his people from Pharaoh.
  • Fasting on Ashura wipes out the sins of the past year as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.
  • It is Sunnah to fast an extra day (either the 9th or 11th Muharram) to distinguish from other traditions.
  • Ashura is a moment of gratitude for Allah’s blessings and for reflecting on lessons of faith, patience, and renewal.
How to Prepare for Ashura

Sunnah actions and practical tips to maximize the spiritual benefits of Ashura.

  • Make intention to fast Ashura. It is preferable to also fast either the day before (Tasua) or day after (11 Muharram).
  • Increase your dua, ask Allah to forgive your past sins, and focus on gratitude for His blessings.
  • Read and reflect on the stories of Prophet Musa (Moses) and how Allah helps the believers.
  • Give charity, reconcile with others, and spread knowledge about the virtues and history of Ashura.
