About Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is the major Islamic festival that comes on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, coinciding with the culmination of the Hajj pilgrimage. It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail for Allah.

  • The Major Eid: One of the two main Islamic holidays and is called the Greater Eid.
  • Hajj Pilgrimage: Coincides with the completion of Hajj rituals in Mecca.
  • Sacrifice: Muslims slaughter animals as sacrifice following the tradition of Prophet Ibrahim.
  • Eid Prayer: Special prayer performed in large open areas and mosques.
Eid Traditions

Eid al-Adha is characterized by many Islamic traditions and customs:

  • Takbeer: Recitation of prayers starting from dawn on Day of Arafah until sunset on the last days of Tashreeq.
  • Sacrifice: Slaughtering sacrificial animals and distributing meat to family and the poor.
  • Family Bonds: Visiting relatives and exchanging greetings and gifts.
  • Worship: Increasing acts of worship during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah.
